Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted Canada’s potential to seize opportunities amidst challenges following his participation in the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York. During a media briefing on Tuesday, Carney emphasized the importance for Canada to uncover possibilities during moments of disruption and assured Canadians that there are numerous avenues for progress.
Carney, who attended President Trump’s address at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly earlier that day, listened to Trump’s criticisms of the United Nations and his emphasis on “America First” policies that have reshaped global dynamics. Trump questioned the purpose of the United Nations, criticizing it for what he deemed as a lack of fulfillment of its potential.
Despite Trump’s critical stance, he acknowledged the institution’s potential for fostering peace. Earlier this year, Trump initiated a review of U.S. engagement with the UN, withdrew from the Human Rights Council, and halted American funding to the organization.
In his address, Trump also rebuffed U.S. allies, including Canada, for supporting efforts to recognize a Palestinian state, citing concerns about rewarding groups like Hamas. Although Carney did not have a direct meeting with Trump during his New York visit, he attended a reception hosted by the president for world leaders.
Carney participated in discussions at a summit focusing on building a sustainable global economy, engaging with leaders from various nations and the World Trade Organization. He stressed the significance of international finance in leveraging private capital for emerging economies and emphasized the need for strategic allocation of resources.
As part of Canada’s strategy to diversify trade and counteract trade disruptions caused by Trump’s tariff policies, Carney held meetings with leaders from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Carney highlighted the progress in bilateral engagements between Canada and China, aiming to elevate the partnership to new heights across multiple sectors.
Efforts to mend strained diplomatic ties with Beijing, primarily resulting from trade disputes triggered by tariff impositions, were also discussed during the meeting. Carney expressed optimism about the evolving relationship between Canada and China amidst rapidly changing global dynamics.
Overall, Carney’s engagements at the UN General Assembly underscored Canada’s proactive stance in navigating international challenges and seeking collaborative opportunities for growth and cooperation.
