Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically themed action thriller “One Battle After Another” dominates the British Academy Film Awards nominations with 14 nods, including five for its cast members. Following closely is Ryan Coogler’s blues-infused vampire saga “Sinners” with 13 nominations, along with Chloé Zhao’s Shakespearean tragedy “Hamnet” and Josh Safdie’s ping-pong adventure “Marty Supreme,” each earning 11 nominations. Guillermo Del Toro’s modern take on “Frankenstein” and the Norwegian family drama “Sentimental Value” both received eight nominations, completing the top contenders for the British and Hollywood Academy Awards.
The nominees for Best Film include “One Battle After Another,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sinners,” and “Sentimental Value.” According to BAFTA chief executive Jane Millichip, the nominations acknowledge films like “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” for addressing significant societal issues such as activism and Black identity, as well as exploring the intricate dynamics of family relationships through storytelling.
In the Best Leading Actor category, contenders include Robert Aramayo for his role in the biographical drama “I Swear,” Timothée Chalamet for “Marty Supreme,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “One Battle After Another,” Ethan Hawke for the Broadway biopic “Blue Moon,” Michael B. Jordan for “Sinners,” and Jesse Plemons for the dystopian tragicomedy “Bugonia.” The Best Leading Actress category features Jessie Buckley for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway in “Hamnet,” competing against Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Chase Infiniti, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone.
Supporting actors from “One Battle After Another,” Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn, also received nominations. The Associated Press was recognized in the Best Documentary category for Mstyslav Chernov’s poignant Ukraine war portrayal “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” a collaboration between the AP and PBS Frontline.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony on Feb. 22 in London, hosted by actor Alan Cumming. The BAFTA Film Awards often serve as a precursor to the Hollywood Academy Awards, offering insights into potential winners. Notably, this year’s Oscar nominations were announced ahead of the BAFTA nominations, with “Sinners” leading with 16 nods, followed by “One Battle After Another” with 13 nominations.
The BAFTAs highlighted performers overlooked by the Oscars, including Paul Mescal and Odessa A’zion in supporting roles. The awards also feature a category for Best British Film, with nominees like “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” “Pillion,” “I Swear,” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.”
Amid efforts to promote diversity, the British film academy has implemented changes to ensure inclusivity. The best director category includes nominees like Chloé Zhao, Paul Thomas Anderson, Josh Safdie, Ryan Coogler, Yorgos Lanthimos for “Bugonia,” and Joachim Trier for “Sentimental Value,” with 25% of the directing nominees being women across all categories, including documentaries and shorts.
