American rapper Wiz Khalifa was recently sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court for drug possession. The incident occurred over a year ago when Khalifa performed at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, Romania, and was reportedly caught smoking cannabis on stage. Romanian authorities stopped him and found him in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis, of which he consumed some during the performance.
The Constanta Court of Appeal issued the final sentence after Khalifa was convicted of possessing dangerous drugs for personal use. Initially, a lower court had fined him 3,600 lei for illegal drug possession, but prosecutors appealed for a harsher penalty.
Romania has strict drug laws, with possession of cannabis for personal use punishable by imprisonment or a fine. It remains uncertain if Romanian authorities will request Khalifa’s extradition, given that he is a U.S. citizen not residing in Romania.
The 38-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh gained fame through his mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice.” During his performance in Romania, he notably smoked a large hand-rolled cigarette while singing his popular track “Young, Wild & Free.”
