British police have officially accused actor-comedian Russell Brand of rape and multiple counts of assault stemming from allegations dating back to the period between 1999 and 2005, as per a police statement released on Friday. 50-year-old Brand, the former spouse of U.S. pop star Katy Perry and a prominent figure in British comedy and broadcasting, had transitioned in recent years to a role as an internet social commentator.
Authorities disclosed that Brand, residing in Oxfordshire, southern England, faces charges including one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. These charges are connected to accusations made by four different women and supposedly occurred in central London and the English coastal town of Bournemouth.
In September 2023, Channel 4 and the Sunday Times reported claims by four women alleging sexual assault or rape by Brand, although the accusers remain unnamed. Brand, known for his edgy stand-up comedy and media presence, has refuted the allegations, emphasizing that his relationships were consensual.
Brand, a comedian, author, and podcaster, vowed to defend himself against the charges in court, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. The court appearance for Brand is scheduled for May 2 in London. Prosecutors from Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service, including Jaswant Narwal, stated that after thorough evaluation of the evidence following a police inquiry prompted by a Channel 4 documentary, Brand is facing charges of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault.
The BBC issued an apology in January to staff members who felt intimidated to report Brand’s behavior due to his celebrity status. Brand had hosted radio shows on the BBC between 2006 and 2008 and engaged in various short-term projects, with the BBC acknowledging past instances of presenters misusing their positions.
