A fresh advertising display in Pasadena, California, is urging singer Chappell Roan to act on her famous lyric, “I’m movin’ to Saskatchewan.” Skyscanner, a travel company, initiated a billboard campaign before Roan’s two fully booked concerts in the city, requesting the pop star to perform in the Prairie province.
The billboard message states, “If you’re serious, Chappell — flights to Saskatchewan are $189 on Skyscanner.” As part of their “Saskatchewan DeTour,” mobile trucks will also encircle the concert venues.
This campaign marks another significant moment in Saskatchewan’s unexpected rise in pop culture, ignited by Roan’s track “The Subway.” Roan’s mention of Saskatchewan sparked widespread enthusiasm.
Toronto writer Abby Zinman expressed her excitement, stating, “It definitely left me speechless and so excited. It just doesn’t happen that often, especially in mainstream American music – we don’t get a lot of acknowledgments like this.”
For Saskatchewan’s 2SLGBTQ+ community, the song’s reference held special significance. Kris Bynes, known online as Little Twink on the Prairies, described Roan’s lyrics as a heartfelt message to queer fans in the Prairies.
Even politicians joined the excitement, with Saskatoon MLA Nathaniel Teed reaching out to Roan’s management team, praising the song for bringing unexpected joy and connection and inviting her to perform in the province.
Although Roan has acknowledged the desire to perform in the province she sings about, her current tour, Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things, does not include a stop in Saskatchewan.
