During the 2024 Festive RIDE program from Nov. 30 to Dec. 31, the Thunder Bay police traffic unit was actively engaged, resulting in the charging of 27 individuals for impaired driving. Const. Tom Armstrong noted that it was a bustling month with a significant number of notable incidents, encompassing a diverse range of offenses and concerning trends. Out of the 27 charged, 16 were impaired by alcohol, eight by drugs, and three faced charges for refusing to provide breath samples.
Armstrong highlighted the involvement of a substantial number of young and novice drivers in the program. Notably, on New Year’s Eve, two G2 license holders, an unlicensed driver, and a prohibited driver were among those charged. Additionally, instances of high-speed driving were reported, including incidents on Memorial Avenue and North Cumberland Street.
In 2024, a total of 191 individuals were charged with impaired driving, with 91 impaired by drugs and the rest a combination of alcohol impairment and refusal to provide breath samples. Armstrong expressed concern over the persistent high numbers of impaired driving cases in Thunder Bay, emphasizing the need for people to understand the severe consequences of such actions.
Armstrong also pointed out the importance of sober licensed passengers taking responsibility and speaking up in situations involving impaired drivers. Meanwhile, the Treaty Three Police Service conducted 62 RIDE checkpoints between Dec. 1 and Jan. 2, resulting in the charging of 10 individuals for impaired driving during the holiday period.
