President Trump and San Francisco’s mayor have confirmed that federal agents will not be deployed to the city, as announced in separate social media updates on Thursday. This decision comes amidst Trump’s efforts to push Democratic-led cities to enhance law enforcement against crime and illegal immigration.
Mayor Daniel Lurie, a Democrat, revealed in a post on X that Trump personally informed him of halting any plans for federal deployment during a call on Wednesday night. Lurie emphasized that while the city will continue collaborating with federal agencies to combat drug-related crimes, militarized immigration enforcement would not be beneficial.
Acknowledging San Francisco’s significance as a global technology hub, Lurie expressed gratitude for Trump’s understanding that the city’s strength contributes to the country’s strength. Trump, in a post on Truth Social, confirmed the cancellation of the federal surge in San Francisco following his conversation with Mayor Lurie.
Furthermore, Trump mentioned that leading tech executives, Jensen Huang from Nvidia and Marc Benioff from Salesforce, conveyed optimism about San Francisco’s future. Trump had previously hinted at sending National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities, which faced legal challenges.
Despite initial reports suggesting a federal deployment, the Trump administration decided to call off sending over 100 federal agents to San Francisco for increased immigration enforcement. This move was met with protest as a group of demonstrators confronted Border Patrol vehicles at a Coast Guard base in the Bay Area.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee voiced opposition to the potential federal deployment, emphasizing unity and denouncing external interference in the city’s affairs. Trump’s immigration policies have drawn criticism from Democrats in major cities, who argue that the crackdown instills fear among law-abiding residents and harms communities.
Trump’s previous remarks on addressing crime in San Francisco were met with resistance from local leaders, with concerns about the impact on residents and businesses. Despite previous intentions to intervene in the city, Trump has now opted to refrain from deploying federal agents to San Francisco.
