“Vancouver Urges Action on Blinding Car Headlights”

Vancouver’s city council unanimously approved a resolution last week, urging the federal government to tackle the issue of excessively bright vehicle headlights. The mayor will be penning a letter to Transport Canada, calling for measures to address the problem of overly intense headlight brightness and proposing updates to national vehicle safety standards.

During the council meeting, Coun. Sean Orr, who introduced the motion, expressed his initial astonishment at the legality of such blinding headlights when he first encountered them on the road. The motion highlights the proliferation of ultra-bright car headlights in Vancouver, causing concerns among drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

LED headlights found on newer vehicles emit a brighter, bluer light compared to the warmer halogen lights traditionally used in cars, leading to a more concentrated and discomforting glare. The motion emphasizes the need for action due to the escalating prevalence of excessively bright headlights in the city.

Margie Sanderson, from Vision Zero Vancouver, an organization advocating for enhanced street safety, pointed out that modern headlights are not only brighter but are also positioned higher on larger vehicles, causing a piercing effect on oncoming eyes. Sanderson highlighted that regions like Europe and Asia have stricter headlight regulations than North America and suggested that the federal government could enforce similar standards on manufacturers.

Sanderson emphasized the importance of proper headlight aim for illuminating the road effectively and recommended driving cautiously, maintaining a safe following distance, and utilizing night mode features on car mirrors where available. She also mentioned that certain autobody shops have the capability to assess headlight brightness for concerned individuals.

The city plans to present this resolution at the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference later this year, seeking broader support for addressing the issue of excessively bright vehicle headlights and ensuring road safety for all.
