Thomas Müller joined the Vancouver Whitecaps with the aim of pursuing championships. His desire was fulfilled as he and the ‘Caps triumphed once again, defeating Vancouver FC 4-2 to secure their fourth consecutive Canadian Championship title. “It’s gratifying to experience this winning sensation, affirming not only our capability to win trophies but also to endure challenging moments,” Müller expressed. “While the Canadian Championship may involve matches against lower-tier teams, the importance lies in finishing the job.”

This victory was significant for the Whitecaps, a Major League Soccer team, as they became the first team in the modern era of the tournament to clinch the Voyageurs Cup four years in a row.

Established in 2008, the Canadian Championship initially featured only three teams until FC Edmonton joined in 2011. The tournament format expanded in 2019 with the inclusion of six Canadian Premier League teams. This year’s edition involves 15 teams from six leagues.

“Each year, the championship seems to improve,” remarked Whitecaps midfielder Ali Ahmed. “We are thrilled and content with our performance.”

Ahmed was honored as the tournament’s most valuable player for scoring twice in the final match. Müller contributed a goal and an assist for Vancouver, while Ryan Gauld, in his first game after a seven-month hiatus, also contributed to the scoring.

Thierno Bah and Nicolas Mezquida both scored and assisted for CPL side Vancouver FC.

The Whitecaps dominated the game from the onset, commanding 74% of possession throughout the match. They outshot Vancouver FC 20-4, with 7 shots on target compared to 2 by the visiting team.

VFC’s interim head coach, Martin Nash, commended his team’s effort. “Our players never gave up,” he stated. “We applied pressure at key moments and had opportunities for counterattacks. Despite the result, there were several positive aspects to take from the game. We can be proud of our performance against a formidable opponent.”

Ahmed opened the scoring early in the match by receiving a pass from Müller and swiftly maneuvering past defenders to slot the ball into the net from outside the penalty area. He then extended the Whitecaps’ lead after VFC’s Kunle Dada-Luke fouled him in the box, leading to a penalty kick converted by Müller.
