“Romanian Worker Trapped in Rome Tower Collapse”

Must read

A worker from Romania was rescued by emergency services in Rome after being trapped under debris from the collapse of a medieval tower near the Colosseum. The incident occurred in Torre dei Conti, where parts of the tower fell to the ground twice, as shown in social media videos and Reuters footage. The worker was in a serious condition and taken to the hospital.

During the rescue operation, another Romanian worker was quickly extracted and hospitalized with serious head injuries. Two additional workers sustained minor injuries but declined hospitalization. The tower, intended for conversion into a museum and conference space, displayed significant internal damage and was part of a renovation project that began in 2021 and was scheduled for completion next year.

The tower, constructed in the early 13th century by Pope Innocent III, was previously used as city hall offices but had been vacant since 2006. Due to ongoing EU-funded restoration work, the area around the tower was closed to pedestrians. Despite being weakened by earthquakes in the past, the tower remains a historical landmark in Rome.
