Israeli Forces Kill 3 Palestinians Near Gaza Border

Israeli gunfire resulted in the deaths of three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Monday, north of Rafah, a city under Israeli jurisdiction, as confirmed by local health officials. This incident added pressure on the fragile ceasefire brokered with U.S. support. The Israeli military reported that they targeted “terrorists” who crossed the designated yellow line, signifying areas still under Israeli control, and were moving towards troops in southern Gaza, posing an immediate threat. While the military did not present evidence, it defended its actions.

Medical personnel mentioned that among those killed was a woman, while the identities of the other two individuals remain unknown. The recent escalation follows a series of Israeli attacks in the region, leading to accusations between Hamas and Israel regarding violations of the ceasefire agreement that ended two years of conflict. Residents reported ongoing house demolitions by Israeli forces in eastern Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza City.

The ceasefire, in effect since October 10, has brought relative calm, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their devastated homes in Gaza. Israel has withdrawn troops from urban areas, and more humanitarian aid has been permitted to enter the region. Hamas released 20 living hostages from Gaza in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, including wartime detainees. However, the handover of hostages’ remains is still pending, with Hamas citing difficulties while Israel accuses the group of delays.

Despite the ceasefire, violence persists. Palestinian health authorities stated that Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of 239 individuals in Gaza post-truce, with nearly half of the casualties occurring in a single day in response to an assault on Israeli soldiers. Israel reported the deaths of three of its soldiers and targeted numerous combatants in response.

Additionally, the Gaza Health Ministry received 45 Palestinian bodies held by Israel on Monday, increasing the total returned bodies to 270. Out of these, only 78 have been identified, with officials facing challenges due to signs of mistreatment and the absence of sufficient forensic resources. The identification process involves posting photos of the remains online to aid families in recognition.

Israel recently transferred the remains of three hostages from Gaza, while Hamas has returned 20 out of the 28 hostages buried in the region. The ongoing exchange of remains and prisoners marks a key aspect of the post-conflict reconciliation efforts between the two parties.
