Conservative MP Jamil Jivani is on a mission to spark a nationwide dialogue with a simple question in mind: “How do we restore the North?” Jivani, 37, introduced his “Restore the North” initiative to address policy gaps affecting young men who are disproportionately represented in crime, overdose, and homelessness statistics.
The initiative, initially focused on helping young men, evolved into campus tours after the tragic death of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk. These tours, a mix of rally, recruitment drive, and debate, involve participants engaging in discussions with three Conservative MPs while Jivani leads as the host.
During a recent campus tour in southern Ontario, including a stop at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), young men expressed concerns about job prospects, identity politics, and feelings of alienation. They highlighted challenges faced by men, particularly in a competitive job market where the unemployment rate for young men reached 22% earlier this year.
Participants at the UTM event shared their frustrations and views on various issues, such as immigration levels and job opportunities. This demographic is seen as the emerging base of the Conservative Party, according to Conservative strategist Ginny Roth.
Jivani, an influential figure in Canadian Conservative politics, gained prominence with his book “Why Young Men,” exploring radicalization factors and advocating for empowering young people. He emphasized the importance of not giving up and inspiring hope among the youth.
The campus events, inspired by Kirk’s approach, aim to encourage open debates and expand freedom of expression while addressing economic and cultural concerns driving young men towards conservative ideologies.
Jivani’s willingness to tackle controversial topics and promote free speech sets him apart within the party. He has been vocal about various issues, including advocating for Christians’ rights and criticizing certain conservative approaches.
The campus events underscore the ongoing battle to protect free speech, with attendees like Brady Burns highlighting the importance of diverse viewpoints on college campuses. Jivani’s efforts to engage with young people and address their concerns mark a significant step in shaping the party’s future base.
Despite differing views and risks involved, Roth believes that strong political leadership requires taking a stand and engaging with diverse perspectives to drive meaningful change.
