A 21-year-old man passed away on Saturday after sustaining stab wounds in Alta Vista, as confirmed by the Ottawa Police Service. Paramedics were called to the scene at 12:32 a.m., where they discovered the man in the 1700 block of Russell Road with potential stab wounds and in cardiac arrest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead later on. Identified as Raphael Atende, the victim marked the fifteenth homicide in Ottawa this year.
Residents in the area have expressed unease following Atende’s tragic death, which occurred shortly after reports of gunfire on the same street. Local Councilor Marty Carr acknowledged the community’s worries and announced plans for upcoming meetings involving law enforcement and residents to address the rise in violence. Concerns have been raised about the safety of children in the neighborhood and the desire for a secure outdoor environment for them to play.
The Ottawa Police’s homicide unit is actively investigating the incident and has urged anyone with relevant information to reach out. Additionally, another stabbing incident occurred in Lowertown later that Saturday afternoon. Emergency services responded to a woman in her 20s with multiple injuries near St. Patrick and Cumberland streets. She was promptly taken to a nearby trauma center in serious condition. While road closures were briefly in effect, they have since been lifted.
