Premier Holt Vows Swift Legislative Action

Premier Susan Holt has expressed her government’s intent to expedite significant decisions as they enter the second year of her term. Holt acknowledged that the initial year focused heavily on consultations but emphasized a shift towards a faster pace of change in the upcoming legislative session.

Last fall, the government introduced merely four substantial bills, but Holt revealed plans to introduce three to four times that number by Christmas this year. Emphasizing the groundwork laid, Holt highlighted the need for swift action to implement the changes initiated by her team.

Reflecting on the past year, Holt underscored the importance of engaging with New Brunswickers, grassroots leaders, and community groups, some of whom have criticized the Liberals for their perceived sluggishness. She expressed eagerness to transition from dialogue to action promptly to yield tangible outcomes.

Green Party Leader David Coon noted a slow progression following an initial rush to fulfill campaign promises last fall. Coon stressed the necessity for structural reforms in public services, especially in healthcare management, as a prerequisite for genuine transformation.

Despite some unmet electoral pledges, such as eliminating the cost-of-carbon adjuster impacting fuel prices, Holt affirmed the commitment to address these issues by the end of 2025. While upcoming decisions may be challenging, Holt assured readiness for the tough choices ahead in the pursuit of reform.

The government’s agenda includes granting more autonomy to the province’s chief medical officer of health and implementing agreements with other provinces to reduce internal trade barriers. Holt reiterated plans for changes within N.B. Power, with a report and decision expected by March 31 next year.

Lt.-Gov. Louise Imbeault is set to deliver the government’s throne speech on Tuesday, with legislative actions scheduled to follow swiftly. Holt reiterated the government’s determination to chart a new course distinct from past trajectories, underlining the imperative for proactive measures over inertia.
