In the days before his passing, a 12-year-old boy under the care of two women in Burlington, Ontario, was reportedly suffering from severe malnutrition, weighing less than he did at six years old. Dr. Emma Cory, a pediatrician testifying as an expert witness in the trial of Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber, who are facing first-degree murder charges, revealed these distressing details. The trial, presided over by Justice Clayton Conlan, is ongoing in Superior Court in Milton and is anticipated to continue through November.
The accused were in the process of adopting the boy, identified as L.L., and his younger brother, known as J.L. Both boys, who are Indigenous, are protected under a publication ban. Cooney and Hamber are also facing charges of confinement, assault using zip ties, and failure to provide the necessary care to J.L.
Allegations from the Crown suggest that Cooney and Hamber mistreated the boys, keeping L.L. confined for most of his final year and subjecting them to surveillance, limited food, and enforced exercise. The defense has raised concerns about the lack of support from the Children’s Aid Society and L.L.’s reported behavioral issues. They have also questioned whether L.L. had a food-related disorder.
Dr. Cory, a medical professional from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto specializing in abuse cases, testified about L.L.’s deteriorating health leading up to his tragic passing. She highlighted significant weight loss and stunted growth in L.L., indicating a severe health decline under the care of Cooney and Hamber.
While the cause of L.L.’s death remains undetermined in court, Dr. Cory emphasized the grave consequences of severe malnutrition, stating that death is a possible outcome for children in such conditions.
The Crown revealed that Cooney and Hamber showed indifference to L.L.’s declining health, with evidence suggesting they neglected to seek medical assistance despite clear signs of distress. Text messages recovered by the police indicated the women were aware of L.L.’s deteriorating condition but failed to take appropriate action, leading to his tragic demise.
On the night of his passing, L.L. was found in a critical state, resembling a much younger child, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his condition shortly after being rushed to the hospital. The trial continues as more details emerge surrounding the tragic events that led to L.L.’s untimely death.
