Long-time political figure Steve Butland, who served as mayor and member of Parliament in Sault Ste. Marie, has passed away at the age of 84. Butland dedicated over three decades to public service, holding various positions such as MP from 1988 to 1993, mayor from 1996 to 2000, and city councillor from 1980 to 1988 and 2003 to 2018.
In recognition of his contributions, Butland was honored with the city’s Medal of Merit in 2018 and awarded the Key to the City in 2025. Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker expressed deep sadness at Butland’s passing, highlighting his enduring commitment to the community and the impact he had on Sault Ste. Marie.
Survived by his wife and daughters, Butland reflected on his political career in a 2018 interview, emphasizing the challenges and rewards of serving in federal politics. Following his tenure in Ottawa, Butland returned to municipal politics in Sault Ste. Marie, where he believed he could make a more direct impact on the lives of residents.
During his time in office, Butland was proud of his role in key projects such as the Essar Centre and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre. Apart from politics, Butland was a respected educator, having taught for 34 years and impacting the lives of many students who later became prominent professionals in the community.
The passing of Butland has been mourned by the city, with flags flown at half-mast in his honor. A book of condolences will be available at the Civic Centre for community members to pay their respects from October 21 to 27.
