“PM Carney’s Nature Strategy: AI Revolutionizing Conservation”

Must read

Welcome to our weekly newsletter focusing on environmental trends and sustainable solutions. I’m Inayat. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new nature strategy includes utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in the conservation sector, a trend worth exploring.

This week, we delve into how AI can revolutionize conservation efforts, the positive impact of wind energy, and how Parks Canada collaborates with social media influencers to influence visitor behavior in Banff.

AI has opened up possibilities in conservation work, such as continuously monitoring salmon migration and population numbers using cameras. Alemu Gonsamo, from McMaster University, is using satellite and aerial imagery to map and assess Canada’s landscapes, including tree counts and carbon storage, but the data processing challenges are immense.

Excitingly, Prime Minister Carney’s nature strategy incorporates AI to expand protected areas and restore ecosystems, crucial in a country with vast lands and limited resources for ground data collection. Gonsamo, a Canada Research Chair, has partnered with organizations like World Wildlife Fund Canada and Indigenous groups to study carbon storage in Canadian soils, particularly in Northern Ontario’s peatlands.

By combining satellite data and machine learning, Gonsamo’s team efficiently processes vast amounts of information. For instance, with just 500 ground measurements of peat depth in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, they accurately estimated the entire region’s peat depth.

These advancements highlight the potential of AI in conservation efforts, showcasing a promising future for environmental protection and restoration.
