After completing a record-breaking journey of 406,771 kilometers around the moon, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch are set to reveal more about their mission to the public. The four astronauts will be fielding questions from the media at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, at 2:30 p.m. ET today, with CBC.ca streaming the news conference live.
Following their return to Earth last Friday, the astronauts underwent medical evaluations and debriefings, and most importantly, were joyfully reunited with their families. They were welcomed back with great enthusiasm, with neighbors lining the streets, waving flags and signs as Victor Glover returned to League City, Texas. Christina Koch was greeted emotionally by her dog, Sadie.
On Saturday, the astronauts were warmly received by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston, where they were introduced to numerous VIP guests, including flight directors, Orion capsule and exploration system managers, high-ranking military officials, and members of Congress. The event was sentimental for the crew, who had trained together for years and spent 10 days in a capsule the size of a small van.
During a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Wiseman expressed the deep bond formed among the crew members during their extraordinary journey around the moon. He described the experience as the most special event in his life and emphasized the longing to be reunited with loved ones back on Earth.
Since their return, the astronauts have resumed their duties, with Hansen undergoing a rigorous lunar surface simulation in a spacesuit. In a separate development, Hansen announced the winner of the Aqualunar Challenge, a competition aimed at developing water-purification solutions for the moon. The $400,000 prize was awarded to the Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation.
NASA is now looking to accelerate the launch frequency of Artemis missions, with plans to establish a lunar base in the future. Hansen, speaking at an event in Houston, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the mission and highlighted the collective effort that made it all possible. He emphasized that their achievements were a reflection of the support and dedication of numerous individuals involved in the project.
