“Resilient Foal Benny Overcomes Rare Condition”

Must read

Benny, a newborn foal, is already making a big impact at Living the Dream Stables in Brackley, P.E.I., despite being just a few days old. Born with a rare condition called wry nose, Benny’s nose and jaw are twisted to one side, making it challenging for him to breathe through one nostril. However, according to Morgan Sheppard, a standardbred horse trainer at the stable, Benny is a resilient fighter who has defied the odds stacked against him.

While wry nose is uncommon, Sheppard mentioned that several horses in the Maritimes have successfully overcome the physical hurdles associated with this condition and excelled as racehorses. The primary goal for Benny is to see him race, although Sheppard emphasized that they are taking each step as it comes.

When Benny was born, the main concern was whether he would be able to nurse properly to boost his immune system, as foals are born with minimal immunity. Fortunately, Benny quickly latched onto his mother and began nursing instinctively, aiding in building up his immunoglobulin levels, which were initially low.

Dr. Shannon Kelley, a large animal veterinarian who assisted in Benny’s delivery, mentioned that the long-term prognosis for horses with wry nose varies based on the severity of the condition and the interventions taken. With proper care and sufficient colostrum intake, horses with wry nose can lead normal lives. Plans for Benny include allowing him to grow and strengthen before considering any surgical procedures to improve his jaw alignment and nasal passage.

While Benny’s future steps remain uncertain, Sheppard hopes that his journey sheds light on the world of harness racing, showcasing the dedication and compassion involved in caring for these animals. She believes Benny’s resilience and the team’s unwavering support exemplify the positive aspects of the sport, highlighting the collective effort to provide him with the best possible care.
