A wild dog recently made headlines for swimming an impressive 3 kilometers across ocean currents. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed amazement at the journey of the so-called “Alcatraz Coyote,” stating that she had never heard of a coyote swimming such a distance through major ocean currents before.

Initially believed to have swum from San Francisco to Alcatraz Island, approximately 1.6 kilometers away, biologists later discovered that the coyote had actually embarked from Angel Island, located further away. The bedraggled coyote was spotted on Alcatraz Island on Jan. 24, looking exhausted as it struggled to climb onto the rocky shoreline.

While scientists confirmed the coyote’s successful journey to the island, they remain uncertain about its motivations. Fox speculated that the coyote likely sought to leave the confines of an island to find a mate and establish territory, following typical biological instincts.

Alcatraz Island, known for its unique environment and conservation efforts, is now a sanctuary for various wildlife. Colorado State University professor Joel Berger suggested that the coyote may have swum to Alcatraz seeking sanctuary after facing aggression in its birth area.

Coyotes are resilient and adaptable animals, capable of adjusting their behavior to coexist with humans. Berger emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence with coyotes and recognizing their ecological role. Project Coyote aims to educate the public on appreciating and understanding these misunderstood predators.

Ongoing research at the University of California Davis involves studying the DNA of coyotes around Angel Island and San Francisco to gain further insights into their behavior and genetics. The recent coyote that swam to Alcatraz is part of a group of 14 coyotes that colonized Angel Island, demonstrating their remarkable ability to adapt and explore new territories. Fox eagerly anticipates the next chapter in the coyote’s journey, hoping to track its progress as it navigates its surroundings.
