Spotify Introduces “Verified by Spotify” Badge for Authentic Artists

Spotify users may notice a new feature on their app called “Verified by Spotify.” This badge is designed to differentiate genuine artists from AI-generated music accounts. The streaming platform aims to highlight artists with consistent listener engagement and a strong presence both on and off the platform.

To receive the verification badge, artists must meet specific criteria, including maintaining at least 10,000 active listeners over three consecutive months. Additionally, Spotify considers the cultural impact and relevance of the artists when granting the badge.

While the verification system aims to address the rise of AI-generated music, concerns have been raised about potential obstacles for new and independent artists. Andrew Cash, CEO of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), sees the verification badge as a necessary step to distinguish authentic music but worries that the criteria could disadvantage smaller artists.

Several prominent artists, including Madonna, BTS, and Bad Bunny, have already been verified on Spotify. However, some notable musicians, such as Joni Mitchell and bbno$, are yet to receive the green badge.

Spotify clarified that the verification rollout will continue in the coming weeks and will not extend to podcasts. The platform remains vigilant about the integrity of human-generated music and is exploring ways to enhance its verification process.

In response to the growing presence of AI-generated content in the music industry, platforms like Apple Music and Deezer have introduced transparency features to identify AI-generated music. Artists, like Taylor Swift, are also taking legal steps to protect their music and image from misuse through artificial intelligence.

The evolving landscape of music streaming platforms underscores the importance of distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content to preserve the integrity of the music industry.
