FIFA is planning to introduce a halftime show at the upcoming World Cup final, featuring performances by Shakira, Madonna, and K-pop sensation BTS. The event is set to take place at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. The initiative aims to raise $100 million US for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, focusing on improving children’s access to education and soccer.
The show, curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay, is expected to bring a Super Bowl-style concert experience to the soccer world. In a video shared on Coldplay’s Instagram page, Martin, along with Sesame Street characters Elmo and Cookie Monster, announced the lineup, which includes BTS. This move marks a shift from the traditional soccer halftime break, which is typically reserved for player rest as per rules set by the International Football Association Board.
The announcement has stirred discussions online, with some fans debating whether halftime shows should be exclusive to American football. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino believes that uniting music and football for a charitable cause on a global platform is a significant step towards supporting children’s dreams.
In addition to the halftime show, FIFA has confirmed that J Balvin will perform at the World Cup’s opening ceremony in Mexico City, alongside various other headliners celebrating Mexican culture. This year’s World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, will take place throughout June and July, promising an exciting and culturally diverse tournament experience.
