The RCMP is seeking assistance from the public in their investigation of four structure fires that occurred overnight in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. According to the RCMP, the first fire was reported on Palliser Crescent before midnight, resulting in the complete destruction of the building and its contents. Police later discovered a residence on Cabot Street ablaze at 3:10 a.m., followed by a fire at an abandoned building near Northmart on Hamilton River Road around 5 a.m. An office building fire was reported an hour later.
Despite no injuries being reported and all buildings being unoccupied, the RCMP believe the fires were intentionally set based on gathered evidence. Residents are urged to review surveillance footage from the areas of Palliser Crescent, Oliver Drive, Cabot Street, Hamilton River Road, and Corte Real Road for any suspicious activity and to share relevant information with the Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP.
Expressing understanding of residents’ concerns, the town reassures the public of their collaboration with law enforcement to ensure safety. Mayor Bert Pomeroy appreciates the efforts of the RCMP and fire department and advises residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
Deputy Mayor Jackie Compton-Hobbs, whose shed was the first to catch fire, emphasizes the seriousness of the incidents, stating, “Enough is enough.” She suspects arson may be involved and acknowledges the damage caused, including the burning of the old Tricia Dee’s restaurant as reported by resident Robert Dawe. Compton-Hobbs praises the swift response of the RCMP and fire department in containing the fires.
Residents are encouraged to remain cautious, report any relevant information to the authorities, and cooperate in the investigation.
