Canadians might witness a stunning northern lights show tonight following a surge of fast-moving particles from the sun towards Earth. Lately, the sun has been quite active, emitting magnetic energy through sunspots and unleashing three bursts of fast-moving particles known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
These CMEs are rapidly traveling within the solar wind towards Earth and could potentially merge into what experts call a “cannibal” CME. When these particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, it results in the mesmerizing display of the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis.
Typically, this captivating light show is visible in northern latitudes, but under the influence of a strong CME, it might be observable further south. A notable example was the May 10, 2024, northern lights event that extended as far south as the Caribbean, attributed to a cannibal CME.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has forecasted a robust geomagnetic storm tonight and into Friday, with storm levels ranging from G1 to G5.
According to an update on the SWPC’s website, the SWPC anticipates the combined CME arrival around mid-afternoon EDT on June 4, potentially reaching up to G3 storm levels thereafter, continuing into the evening and possibly overnight hours of June 5.
A satellite captured several solar flares on the surface of the sun over the past few days.
Predicting the northern lights occurrence is challenging, but the SWPC expresses a fair level of confidence in its arrival on Earth, albeit uncertain about the intensity. The SWPC suggests potential G3 storm levels post the CME passage.
“Intensity remains uncertain due to the complex nature of these CMEs. The consensus points towards potential G3 storm levels, with a likelihood of G4 storms,” the SWPC stated.
