A 14-year-old boy, Cheng En Du, initially felt unsure when his mother suggested starting weekly neighborhood cleanups after their move from China to Moncton. Geng Chen, Du’s mother, mentioned that as they adjusted to life in a new country, they received much support from Canadians. In gratitude, the family decided to give back by cleaning up the neighborhood regularly.
Chen, who is still learning English, expressed that amidst language barriers and life pressures, the kindness they received motivated them to contribute positively. Their initiative, named Green Guardians Moncton, involves cleaning the streets weekly to enhance the environment and pay homage to Canada.
Although Du felt self-conscious during their first cleanup, he persevered with his mother’s encouragement. They have already conducted eight community cleanups, sorting and disposing of the collected trash. Through their Facebook page, Green Guardians Moncton, they update the community on their progress and aim to continue their efforts in their downtown area whenever weather permits.
Their commitment has not only improved their surroundings but also fostered a bond with neighbors, some of whom have shown interest in joining their cause. Despite receiving offers for assistance, scheduling challenges due to work and school commitments have made coordination difficult for the family.
The family’s dedication to volunteerism extends beyond local cleanups, encompassing previous volunteer work in China and Nepal, as well as at a Moncton animal shelter. With a focus on sustainability, they collect recyclables during their cleanups to exchange for funds, which will be donated to the local food bank.
Chen emphasized the importance of individual actions in inspiring collective change, envisioning a future where community welfare efforts flourish. Du echoed his mother’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of expressing gratitude and giving back to a community that has extended support to them.
