Starting pitcher Shane Bieber has made the decision to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays for the upcoming season instead of testing free agency. He has opted to exercise his $16 million US player option for the 2026 season, as confirmed by the team on Wednesday. Bieber, aged 30, delivered a 4-2 record and a 3.57 earned-run average with Toronto following his transfer from the Cleveland Guardians during the recent summer trade deadline.
His choice to return bolsters the team’s starting rotation, which is anticipated to feature top pitcher Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and potentially Eric Lauer. The future of right-handers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt, both free agents, remains uncertain. In the post-season, Bieber achieved a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA. Notably, he secured a victory in Game 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series and also pitched in Game 7, where he conceded a game-winning home run to Will Smith in the 11th inning of a 5-4 loss at Rogers Centre.
Since making his debut in the major leagues with Cleveland in 2018, Bieber has amassed a 66-34 record and a 3.24 ERA. He notably clinched the American League Cy Young Award in the shortened 2020 season after an outstanding 8-1 record and 1.63 ERA with the Guardians.
Bieber marked his debut for Toronto on August 22, allowing only two hits across six innings in his first major-league start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2024. Despite the possibility of securing a lucrative long-term contract elsewhere, his decision to remain with the Blue Jays for 2026 comes as a surprise. By staying with the team, he aims to further enhance his value in a competitive environment as the Blue Jays are expected to be strong contenders again next season.
