From affordable housing in Alberta to high taxes in Quebec, there are many commonly held beliefs about the cost of living in different regions of Canada. However, are these perceptions accurate?

One way to assess affordability nationwide is through the “market basket measure,” which evaluates the cost of a set basket of essential goods and services. This measure indicates that British Columbia has the highest cost of living, with Alberta ranking second, while Quebec is the most affordable province in terms of the cost of that basket of goods.
When it comes to housing affordability, Vancouver and Toronto are known for their high property prices. However, Edmonton and Calgary are among the most affordable housing markets in Canada, according to Mathieu Laberge, the chief economist at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
As for grocery costs, there has been a significant increase in food prices across the country, with Quebec having the highest proportion of food expenses in the household budget due to lower costs in other areas. Transportation costs, particularly car insurance premiums, vary widely across provinces, with Alberta offering more affordable rates compared to Ontario.
Regarding taxes, Alberta stands out for its tax-friendly environment, with the province having the largest tax-free income bracket in Canada. In contrast, Quebec offers various tax credits and benefits for families, which can offset the higher tax burden in the province.
Quebec also excels in utility affordability due to its abundant hydroelectric power, offering lower rates compared to other provinces. In contrast, Alberta’s deregulated electricity market leads to fluctuating prices and higher bills for residents like Sarah Lopes Rodrigues.
