On Tuesday, Misha Pavelick’s former girlfriend testified at the trial of a man accused of second-degree murder in Pavelick’s death in 2006. The incident occurred at a campground near Regina Beach, about 45 kilometers northwest of Regina. The accused, now 36, is facing the charges in front of a jury at Regina Court of King’s Bench. Due to being minors at the time of the incident, neither the accused nor the ex-girlfriend can be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
According to the ex-girlfriend’s testimony, there was tension at a graduation party when she arrived with her new boyfriend, Andrew Perkins. Pavelick had expressed a desire to fight Perkins before an altercation ensued. The situation escalated when Pavelick smashed a bottle over Perkins’s head, leading to a physical confrontation between the two men. The ex-girlfriend recalled seeing Pavelick being kicked by a group of individuals, including the accused, as he lay on the ground covering his head.
During the trial, the ex-girlfriend’s account was questioned by the defence, particularly regarding whether she witnessed the accused kicking Pavelick. She affirmed that she was certain of what she saw. After the altercation, Pavelick got up and moved away from the scene, appearing to be in distress. The ex-girlfriend, unaware of the stabbing at that point, stayed by Pavelick’s side, holding his hand as he struggled to breathe. She contacted Pavelick’s father to inform him of the situation and stayed with Pavelick until the RCMP arrived to take him to the hospital. It was only later that she learned of Pavelick’s death.
The trial, now in its second week, is set to resume on Wednesday.
