Marley Moose, a 22-year-old, is dedicating her third summer to reforesting areas in northern Manitoba devastated by wildfires. Despite her efforts, the task has become more difficult following the termination of a federal initiative aiming to plant two billion trees by 2030.
The forest in Manitoba’s Interlake region, previously affected by a jack pine budworm infestation in 2016, faced further destruction in 2021 due to wildfires in the Devils Lake area. Moose, actively planting jack pine and black spruce trees, expressed her commitment to restoring life to these scorched lands.
Participating in a tree-planting program with Nekoté LP, an Indigenous-owned corporation, Moose emphasized the importance of caring for the land they inhabit. The Canadian Tree Nursery Association highlighted the urgent need for tree replenishment, stating that Canada is losing trees faster than they are being replaced naturally or by human intervention.
The cancellation of the 2 Billion Trees Program, a federal initiative announced by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the 2019 election campaign, has put projects like the Nekoté LP tree-planting initiative at risk. This decision, made to redirect funds towards defense and infrastructure, has left existing programs struggling to meet their reforestation goals amidst recurring wildfires.
Doug Hevenor, the executive director of the CTNA, expressed concerns about the impact of mega-fires on natural regeneration and the loss of seed sources. With Canada facing consecutive severe fire seasons and forests becoming carbon emitters rather than sinks, collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders are crucial to address the void left by the canceled program.
Farron Sharp, a project manager with the Blue-Green Planet Project, is seeking alternative funding sources to sustain tree-planting initiatives like the one in Manitoba’s Devils Lake area. Despite the setbacks, the dedication of individuals like Sharp and Moose underscores the importance of reforestation efforts in mitigating the environmental impact of human activities and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
