Susan Petley experienced a mix of emotions as she crossed the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. This long-awaited moment was bittersweet for her. Petley accepted her late daughter Bethany Anne Coupe’s high school diploma posthumously, as Bethany had passed away from cancer in April.
Petley expressed pride and heartbreak, holding back tears while receiving the diploma alongside her daughter Cynthia. Bethany, aged 35, had been battling health issues for years, particularly pancreatic cancer, which posed challenges in completing her studies. Despite her illness, Bethany remained determined to graduate, studying even from her hospital bed with the support of the school staff.
Initially, Petley found it hard to grasp Bethany’s unwavering commitment, but she later realized that it was a profound gesture of love and accomplishment for her daughter. Bethany had aspirations of furthering her education at St. Clair College to pursue a career benefiting children or animals.
During the ceremony, six siblings, the Teslfalem Arey family, eagerly awaited their turn to receive their diplomas together. Rodas Tesfalem Arey, one of the siblings, expressed immense pride in their collective achievement. Originally from Eritrea, the family moved to Windsor from Sudan, and their parents witnessed all their children graduating in succession.
The siblings shared their career aspirations, including becoming mechanics, personal support workers, pilots, and a pharmacist technician, emphasizing how the school staff at St. Michael’s had motivated and guided them towards their goals.
Both Petley and Rodas Tesfalem Arey stressed the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving one’s aspirations. They highlighted how Bethany’s resilience and dedication serve as a reminder that with unwavering commitment, any goal can be attained.
