NHL star Brad Marchand surprised attendees at a Halifax U18 hockey game by showing up to support a close friend who recently lost his young daughter. JP MacCallum, head coach of the March and Mill Company Hunters, took a break to mourn the passing of his 10-year-old daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, after her battle with cancer.

Despite being in the midst of the NHL regular season with the Florida Panthers, Marchand didn’t hesitate to return home and step in for MacCallum on the team bench. Reflecting on Selah’s passing, Marchand described her as a remarkable girl who impacted many lives with her love and positivity.

Over a thousand individuals gathered at the Halifax Forum to offer their support to the grieving family. Marchand, who has shared a 25-year friendship with JP, emphasized the deep connection they share and the pivotal role JP played in his life.

Acknowledging the understanding and support of the Panthers organization regarding his compassionate decision, Marchand highlighted the solidarity and camaraderie within the hockey community. The game served as a fundraiser, with proceeds from various activities directed towards supporting Selah’s family during this challenging time.

Paul Graham, president of the U18 Major Hockey League, expressed his admiration for the community’s overwhelming display of support and unity. He commended Marchand for demonstrating profound respect for his roots and the individuals who have been instrumental in his journey.

The event not only showcased the unwavering support for Selah’s family but also underscored the tight-knit nature of the Nova Scotia hockey community, exemplifying the spirit of solidarity and mutual aid among its members.
