“P.E.I. Scuba Divers Clean Up North Rustico Waters”

Must read

A group known as P.E.I. Scuba Divers has contributed to cleaning up the waters near the North Rustico wharf. The group recently conducted its inaugural organized underwater cleanup at the North Shore harbor. Several divers, including Kelly Campbell, participated in the cleanup as a way to give back to the community and enjoy time underwater.

Campbell highlighted the valuable support received from local fishermen who provide diving tips and locations. The divers, equipped with mesh bags, dived beneath the boats near the wharf, focusing on removing debris sitting atop the silt at depths of 20 to 30 feet. Among the items retrieved were typical fishing harbor waste such as broken boards and fragments from trailers, along with a fisherman’s lost cellphone.

During the cleanup, the divers made intriguing discoveries, including a vintage Pepsi bottle with etchings and no label. Campbell expressed surprise at the relatively clean condition of the harbor, considering its industrial nature. He mentioned finding historical artifacts and unique treasures during the cleanup, adding excitement to the experience.

The cleanup was facilitated by warmer waters, with temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius, making the dive more comfortable for participants. Although the dive season has concluded, the group intends to conduct further wharf cleanups in the coming spring. Those interested in arranging a cleanup in their harbor can contact the P.E.I. Scuba Divers group through their Facebook page.

This initiative not only benefits the local environment but also fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship among recreational divers.
