Residents of Gaultois in outport Newfoundland have found a new recreational interest in the form of pickleball, diverting attention from discussions of resettlement. A group of locals, led by part-time resident Martine Blue, recently constructed a pickleball court in the community with the support of a grant from Active NL. Blue saw the project as a way to rejuvenate Gaultois’ neglected outdoor recreation area and provide a fun activity accessible to all skill levels.
The decision to reject resettlement in Gaultois was reaffirmed in 2023 when residents failed to meet the 75% majority vote required for relocation approval. This was not the first time the community rejected resettlement, having previously voted against it twice when a 90% majority was necessary.
The newly built pickleball court, crafted using pressure-treated wood instead of traditional concrete, is expected to attract players of varying abilities, with equipment available for doubles matches. Ron Simms, a seasoned pickleball player from Gaultois, highlighted the court’s unique location on what was once a fish flake and expressed hopes that it would draw tourists seeking new recreational experiences.
With a current population of around 70 residents, including a few young individuals, Gaultois anticipates a growing interest in pickleball. Both Blue and Simms envision a future where the sport thrives in the community, with dreams of hosting tournaments on the south coast. Simms noted the rising popularity of pickleball in rural areas and pledged to bring his paddles on every visit to Gaultois.
The community looks forward to the positive impact of the pickleball court and the potential it holds for fostering a sense of community and attracting visitors seeking unique recreational opportunities.
