Rapper Kodak Black was recently apprehended in central Florida on charges related to drug trafficking, marking another legal entanglement for the artist. Known legally as Bill Kapri, he was detained in Orange County on a felony accusation of trafficking MDMA, a synthetic substance commonly referred to as ecstasy or molly.
Kapri formally pleaded not guilty and opted for a jury trial, forgoing a physical presence at a forthcoming arraignment session in state court. The arrest stemmed from a police incident in December, triggered by reports of gunfire in an Orlando neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers encountered Kapri among a group gathered near high-end vehicles parked in the area.
During the encounter, authorities discovered a white substance on a $100 bill inside a Lamborghini SUV that emitted a cannabis odor. This discovery prompted a search of the vehicle, revealing a pink bag containing MDMA, $37,000 in cash, and various documents bearing Kapri’s name, as detailed in the police report.
Investigators noted that the pink bag matched one observed in an Instagram photo shared by Kapri, which also featured a distinctive lighter present in the bag. Despite denials from all individuals present, including Kapri, he claimed ownership of the money, asserting it was related to his business.
Representatives Ambrosia Healy and Kevin Young from Universal Music Group, who manage Kapri, did not provide a response to inquiries seeking comment. Following his arrest, Kapri was released on bail the following night, according to a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Kapri has encountered legal troubles in the past, notably in 2023 when authorities in Plantation, Fla., apprehended him while he was asleep behind the wheel with a substance resembling cocaine around his mouth. Subsequent lab tests revealed the substance to be oxycodone, for which Kapri had a valid prescription. This incident violated his probation from an unrelated case, resulting in a two-month confinement in Miami.
In a separate 2022 incident, Kapri faced charges of oxycodone trafficking and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was released on bond under the condition of routine drug testing. Court records indicate that Kapri was mandated to undergo 30 days of drug rehabilitation in 2023 after failing a drug test and testing positive for fentanyl shortly after.
In January 2021, former President Donald Trump commuted a three-year federal prison sentence previously imposed on Kapri for falsifying documents to procure firearms. Notably, under his moniker Kodak Black, Kapri has achieved commercial success, selling over 30 million singles, including chart-topping hits like “Super Gremlin,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.
