U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, formerly a strong supporter of Donald Trump who has now turned into a critic of the president, announced on Friday that she will be stepping down from her congressional position in January.
In a video exceeding 10 minutes in length that she shared online, Greene elaborated on her choice, stating that she has always faced animosity in Washington, D.C., and never truly felt accepted.
Her decision to resign came after a public fallout with Trump in recent times, during which the congresswoman openly criticized him for his views on files related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his stances on foreign policy and healthcare.
Trump labeled her a “traitor” and “wacky,” declaring his support for a challenger against her in the upcoming re-election campaign.
Since launching her political career in 2020, Greene had been closely associated with the Republican president.
In her video statement, she emphasized her unwavering loyalty to Trump, except on a few specific issues, and expressed disappointment that he attacked her for having differing opinions.
She argued that loyalty should be reciprocal and stressed the importance of being able to vote based on conscience and represent the interests of her district as a “representative.”
Greene rose to prominence as a key figure in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement and swiftly garnered attention on Capitol Hill for her frequently unconventional views.
By aligning herself with the QAnon conspiracy theory and associating with white supremacists, Greene faced opposition from party leaders but received praise from Trump, who referred to her as “a real WINNER!”
Despite initial controversies, she demonstrated legislative skill over time, forming alliances with then-GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, who later became House Speaker. Greene was a respected figure on the right wing until McCarthy’s removal in 2023.
Trump, speaking to ABC News, hailed Greene’s decision to resign, effective as of January 5, as “great news for the country.”
Representative Thomas Massie, a supporter of Greene in the House, commended her as embodying the essence of a true representative.
Barbara Comstock, a former Republican House member critical of Trump, praised Greene’s choice on social media, applauding her for refusing to endure Trump’s mistreatment and threats while ending up in the minority.
In contrast, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned Greene’s shift from a Trump loyalist to a critic, highlighting discrepancies between her words and actions in terms of healthcare policies and corruption schemes.
