Tim Hortons Shifts to Local Hiring, Recruits 10K Workers

Tim Hortons has made a commitment to recruit around 10,000 local workers, reducing its reliance on the temporary foreign worker program. The coffee giant has already conducted 400 hiring events in March and April, with plans to continue hiring local staff throughout the year.

This shift marks a departure from the company’s previous use of the temporary foreign worker program, which was prompted by labor shortages during the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic. Tim Hortons has emphasized its dedication to hiring employees from the communities where its restaurants are situated.

According to Tim Hortons, only 3.6% of its workforce in restaurant roles, equivalent to 4,000 employees, are currently part of the temporary foreign worker program. These individuals are hired in areas with documented labor shortages.

In response to a rise in youth unemployment, Tim Hortons has indicated that lobbying efforts are no longer necessary. The company’s parent organization, Restaurant Brands International, previously lobbied the government on immigration policies related to the temporary foreign worker program.

Recent changes within Tim Hortons coincide with its announcement of expanding its operations by adding 80 new restaurants across Canada and renovating 400 existing cafes by the year’s end. The majority of new locations are planned for Ontario, followed by Alberta and Quebec.

The entry of Dunkin’ back into the Canadian market has also influenced Tim Hortons’ strategic initiatives. Montreal-based Foodtastic announced a deal to reintroduce Dunkin’ to Canada, with plans for multiple stores in the near future. Tim Hortons clarified that its expansion plans are part of a long-term investment strategy in Canadian communities.

Business experts suggest that Tim Hortons’ recent moves are partly in response to Dunkin’s return, as the American chain’s appeal to a younger demographic poses a competitive challenge. Tim Hortons’ emphasis on local investments and community engagement may serve as a strategic advantage in facing this competition.

The focus on local hiring and community involvement aligns with Tim Hortons’ longstanding presence in Canadian communities, positioning it well against competitors like Dunkin’. The company’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment concerns could further enhance its reputation among Canadians.
