U.S. President Donald Trump has officially called off the Freedom 250 concerts set to take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The cancellation comes as a result of the majority of the original artists withdrawing from the event.
Instead of the planned concerts, Trump announced that on June 24, there will be a “the Greatest Rally, EVER!” to commemorate the U.S.’s 250th birthday. This decision was shared on his Truth Social account after he had previously hinted at the possibility of scrapping the Freedom 250 event.
While the new event will not feature the initially planned musical performances, Trump revealed that Lee Greenwood, a staunch supporter of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, will introduce him with the iconic song “GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.” Additionally, Christopher Macchio from the New York Tenors will showcase his vocal talent with a selection of classic songs.
Several artists who had initially committed to the concert series have dropped out citing concerns over the partisan nature of the event. Among those who withdrew are Poison frontman Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, Morris Day and the Time, the Commodores, rapper Young MC, and most recently, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli.
Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida are now the only remaining acts from the original lineup willing to perform at the event organized by the Trump administration. Vanilla Ice had previously expressed his willingness to perform at the controversial event, including jokingly mentioning a performance for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following the cancellation of the series, Vanilla Ice expressed his desire to still be part of the revised event during an interview with Fox News. The new event will feature military bands like the U.S. Army Band ‘Perishing’s Own,’ the Armed Forces Choir, and ‘The President’s Own’ United States Marine Band. Trump emphasized that the main highlight of the event would be his presence as the “fine and highly dignified gentleman” known as President Donald J. Trump.
The Freedom 250 website describes the anniversary event as a celebration of the American spirit’s triumph. Other events marking the U.S.’s birthday have faced criticism for glorifying Trump with initiatives like featuring his face on commemorative coins and signatures on bills and passports.
