Quarterback Nathan Rourke made a spectacular 70-yard run in the third quarter, leading the B.C. Lions to a 37-24 victory over the Edmonton Elks in the CFL playoffs on Friday after overcoming an early deficit with 25 straight points.
Cornerback Robert Carter Jr. also contributed to the Lions’ win by returning an interception for a 50-yard touchdown, extending their winning streak to five games and boosting their record to 10-7, securing the second spot in the CFL West.
The Elks, on the other hand, had their two-game winning streak halted and dropped to 7-10, placing last in the West and missing out on the playoffs. Edmonton had a 10-2 lead in the middle of the second quarter.
Rourke completed 21 out of 32 passes for 338 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Running back James Butler also made a significant impact with a touchdown and a two-point conversion after running for 82 yards on 15 carries.
Keon Hatcher Sr. caught a 17-yard touchdown pass, while kicker Sean Whyte successfully made field goals from 37 and 34 yards.
Elks’ quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 19 of 34 passes for 230 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He also scored a 15-yard run in the final minute of the game.
Running back Javon Leake and wide receiver Binjimen Victor each contributed a touchdown, with Vincent Blanchard adding a 45-yard field goal.
Earlier in the day, the Saskatchewan Roughriders suffered a close 17-16 defeat to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Roughriders, who have secured the top spot in the West with a 12-5 record, were bested by the 9-8 Bombers, who now stand fourth in the conference, positioning them for a potential playoff spot.
The Lions took control in the third quarter with Carter intercepting a Fajardo pass for a touchdown, followed by a successful field goal after the Elks’ failed third-down attempt. Rourke then extended the lead with his impressive 70-yard run.
Rourke orchestrated a remarkable drive just before halftime, covering 78 yards in eight plays, leading to a Butler touchdown and a tied score of 10-10.
The Lions’ first-quarter points came from a safety by linebacker Ben Hladlik, while the Elks took the lead in the second quarter with a Leake touchdown run and a Blanchard field goal.
