“France Condemns U.S. Boat Strikes in Caribbean”

France’s foreign affairs minister has strongly criticized the United States for its recent boat strikes in the Caribbean, calling them a violation of international law. Jean-Noël Barrot expressed his concerns about the military operations during the G7 summit of foreign ministers in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.

The U.S. military has conducted 19 strikes against suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coasts of Latin America, resulting in the deaths of at least 76 individuals. The U.S. accuses Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of being involved with drug cartels and has authorized covert CIA operations in Venezuela.

Barrot emphasized that these operations in the Caribbean region contravene international law and could impact French territories where over a million citizens reside. He stressed the importance of avoiding any escalation that could lead to instability in the region.

Meanwhile, a CNN report suggested that Britain had halted intelligence sharing with the U.S. over concerns about being associated with the deadly boat strikes. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any raised concerns about the operations near Venezuela during the G7 meetings.

Speaking to reporters, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand clarified that Canada is not involved in the U.S. strikes on Venezuelan vessels and emphasized that the United States is using its own intelligence resources for these operations.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced a halt to intelligence sharing with the U.S. until the boat attacks cease, emphasizing the need to prioritize human rights in the fight against drugs. The Washington Post criticized the U.S. for potentially alienating allies with its actions.

The Trump administration justifies the strikes as part of a non-international armed conflict against drug trafficking, citing a high number of drug-related deaths in the U.S. Venezuela is primarily known as a transshipment route for drugs from other South American countries.

Despite some international criticism, the U.S. Democrats have struggled to garner support in the Senate to challenge the administration’s actions. California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the use of lethal force in the drug interdiction efforts, questioning the lack of due process and rule of law.

As tensions escalate in the region, Venezuela faces challenges in its military capabilities amid the U.S. military presence. The country’s smaller military force is preparing for potential responses to the situation.
