Canada’s national orchestra is set to perform in Eskasoni First Nation, with Mi’kmaw artist Emma Stevens joining the prestigious ensemble. Stevens, known for her Mi’kmaw-language rendition of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” will showcase her culture and music at the event. She has gained international recognition for her music and advocacy for Indigenous issues in Canada, emphasizing language preservation and awareness of Indigenous women’s challenges.

Stevens, who has been reconnecting with her Mi’kmaw roots, expressed pride in writing her first Mi’kmaw song. She hopes to inspire younger generations to embrace their language and heritage. Alongside performing her viral Mi’kmaw cover of “Blackbird,” Stevens will also present an original song, “The Ballad of Shubenacadie,” addressing the Canadian residential school system.

The orchestra’s tour will also feature Wolastoqiyik artist Jeremy Dutcher, a Polaris Music Prize winner from Tobique First Nation. Dutcher, an advocate for traditional Indigenous music, aims to celebrate the resilience of Indigenous culture through his performance. Both Stevens and Dutcher are excited to share their music and stories with the audience, highlighting the significance of preserving Indigenous languages and traditions.

The collaboration between these talented artists and the National Arts Centre Orchestra represents a unique opportunity to showcase Indigenous voices and music on a national platform. The upcoming concerts in Nova Scotia promise to be a celebration of Indigenous artistry and cultural heritage.
