The Municipality of Red Lake in northwestern Ontario has announced that the Miss McKenzie II ferry will be unavailable for the remainder of the season due to extensive repairs and challenges in sourcing necessary parts. Officials are actively seeking Transport Canada-compliant alternative options to facilitate transportation between McKenzie Island and the mainland during this period.
Mayor Fred Mota expressed understanding of the significance of the ferry service for McKenzie Island residents and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the situation. The municipality’s team is actively working to identify alternative transportation solutions to ensure residents maintain reliable access to the mainland throughout the service interruption.
Chief administrative officer Michelle Hendry mentioned that due to the custom-built nature of the ferry and the need to acquire parts from Wisconsin, repairs cannot be completed before winter. Despite ferry service typically concluding in mid-November, the early shutdown presents challenges given the season’s conditions.
Hendry emphasized the efforts to explore various options that align with Transport Canada’s safety and insurance standards, although no final decisions have been made. The municipal council is dedicated to finding a resolution, recognizing the essential reliance of McKenzie Island residents on the ferry service.
Updates regarding transportation alternatives will be communicated to residents through the municipality’s website, Facebook page, and direct notifications.
