“Canada’s Economy Rebounds with 0.5% Growth in April”

Canada’s economy displayed signs of recovery by expanding 0.5 percent in April, reversing a trend of sluggish and negative growth in previous months. The growth in real gross domestic product was driven by a 2.9 percent increase in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sectors, according to the latest report from Statistics Canada released on Tuesday.

The report highlighted that the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector experienced its largest monthly growth rate since February 2024, offsetting the previous month’s contraction. This positive development comes at a time when concerns about Canada’s economic outlook have been raised, with previous reports indicating contractions in GDP for the first and last quarters of 2025, sparking fears of a potential recession.

Oil and gas extraction saw a notable 3.7 percent increase in April, with oil sands extraction leading the growth. The agency’s report also projected a modest 0.1 percent growth in May, driven by expansion in finance, insurance, real estate, and leasing sectors.

Apart from natural resources, other industries such as manufacturing and the public sector also experienced growth in April, with federal government public administration expanding for the first time in four months. Fourteen out of 20 industrial sectors recorded growth during the month.

The report noted that April’s GDP growth slightly exceeded previous predictions of 0.4 percent. Analysts cautiously welcomed the positive figures, with some acknowledging the volatility of monthly data points. Despite the optimistic outlook, some experts remain cautious about potential revisions to the economic data.

Overall, the report suggests a positive turnaround in the Canadian economy, with increased activity in various sectors contributing to a more optimistic outlook for the second quarter. The Bank of Canada’s upcoming interest rate decision on July 15 will be closely monitored in light of these economic developments.
