Phones in southern Manitoba were abuzz with tornado alerts on Tuesday night, even though the threat was distant for many recipients. Numerous individuals reported receiving over 20 alerts throughout the evening. Two tornadoes have been confirmed south of Winnipeg, with Environment and Climate Change Canada investigating the potential development of additional tornadoes in the region.
Tyler Samagalski, who was at a bar in East Selkirk on Tuesday night, mentioned that he and fellow patrons started ignoring the repeated warning alerts on their phones as they observed no signs of an approaching tornado. The alerts were issued for tornadoes in the “mobile coverage area,” meaning all devices connected to a cellphone tower in the affected region received the alert, regardless of their actual proximity to the threat.
Environment Canada stated that an investigation is ongoing to understand why some individuals received multiple alerts. While no immediate changes to the warning system were mentioned, the organization indicated plans for a more targeted warning system for thunderstorms and tornadoes. This system, similar to what is used in the United States, would only alert individuals in the storm’s path.
Justin Oertel, a forecaster, highlighted the need for this change, as the current system leads to alert fatigue among Canadians. Concerns were raised that if a tornado were to hit a major urban center like Winnipeg or Brandon, the warnings might not be taken seriously due to the excessive alerts received without corresponding severe weather.
Residents expressed unease over the unnecessary fear caused by the tornado warnings, with some receiving alerts hours before receiving a tailored warning from their municipality. While some preferred numerous alerts to no alerts at all, others stressed the importance of a more targeted and specific alert system to avoid panic or complacency.
As individuals voiced their frustrations on social media and shared experiences of turning off their ringers, there were concerns raised about the impact on children with anxiety. Many expressed a desire for alerts to provide more precise details on the location and severity of tornado sightings to improve the effectiveness and relevance of the warnings.
