Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, “Fjord,” set in Norway and focusing on political divisions, has secured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or win, following his acclaimed work on “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.”
Amid a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, “Fjord” stood out for its compelling narrative centered around what Mungiu described as “left-wing fundamentalism.” The film features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who face a challenging situation in Norway when their children are removed by child services due to disciplinary issues.
Reflecting on the themes of his film, Mungiu highlighted the current societal divisions and radicalization, emphasizing the need to combat fundamentalism and promote values like empathy, inclusion, and addressing trauma.
Mungiu joins a select group of filmmakers by winning the Palme d’Or twice, with his previous win for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” in 2007. The victory for “Fjord” also continues the remarkable success of Neon, the film’s distributor, which has now claimed seven consecutive Palme d’Or winners.
The accolades for “Fjord” contribute to Neon’s impressive track record, following previous successes like Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident” and the 2024 winner, “Anora,” which went on to secure the coveted best picture award at the Oscars.
