A recent study highlights the increased health risks to both humans and animals when homeless individuals are forced to coexist with urban coyotes in secluded city areas. The research, published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, focused on homeless encampments in Edmonton’s river valley and their proximity to urban coyotes.

The study, led by the Edmonton Urban Coyote Project, revealed that homeless individuals and coyotes often inhabit close quarters, leading to potential conflicts and disease transmission between the two groups. This situation poses risks for both parties, with the potential for human-coyote encounters and the spread of infectious diseases.

According to Sage Raymond, the lead author of the study, the coexistence of extreme poverty and urban coyotes in North American cities like Edmonton is a concerning trend. The study found that individuals living near coyote dens face increased risks of dangerous interactions with the animals and are more susceptible to contracting infectious diseases carried by coyotes.

The study emphasized the need for targeted conservation efforts, awareness campaigns, and improved medical care for vulnerable populations rather than resorting to crackdowns on homeless individuals or coyote culls. The Edmonton Urban Coyote Project, which has been monitoring the city’s coyote population since 2009, estimates that there are around 3,000 coyotes in Edmonton, many of which rely on the river valley for habitat.

Colleen Cassady St. Clair, a wildlife biologist involved in the study, highlighted the ecological dangers posed by homeless encampments attracting coyotes with easy access to human food. The study also raised concerns about the transmission of diseases from coyotes to humans, particularly alveolar echinococcosis, a parasitic infection found in Edmonton’s coyote population.

Darcy Visscher, a biologist specializing in urban ecology, emphasized the heightened risk faced by Edmonton’s homeless population due to the potentially fatal nature of alveolar echinococcosis in humans. The study’s findings underscore the importance of monitoring infection rates and enhancing outreach efforts with frontline agencies to address the risks associated with human-coyote interactions.

Overall, the study advocates for improved health-care programs, hygiene supplies for encampments, and education on safe practices to deter coyotes. However, the ultimate solution lies in providing secure housing for everyone to mitigate the vulnerabilities faced by homeless populations in urban environments.
