Frazier Fathers, a local researcher advocating for improved safety and affordability in west end housing, has been elected as the newest city councillor for Windsor. Fathers secured victory on Monday to represent Ward 2, encompassing areas like Sandwich and other west end neighborhoods. Garnering 983 votes, he claimed 47.17% of the total vote count in a competitive field of 15 candidates.
As a consultant specializing in non-profit and affordable housing, Fathers will hold office for a year until the next municipal election. His campaign priorities included initiatives for traffic calming, park maintenance, and a crackdown on unsafe housing, particularly emphasizing the implementation of a permanent rental licensing program. This program mandates building inspections, fire code checks, and electrical system safety assessments for landlords with five or fewer units before renting out their properties.
In support of the rental licensing program, Fathers highlighted its significance in providing data to monitor problematic properties, holding negligent landlords accountable, and supporting responsible property maintenance. He stressed the importance of fairness, safety, and empowering residents to maintain their quality of life without disruption from a few irresponsible actors.
Having previously worked at the United Way of Windsor-Essex and led community consultations for the Gordie Howe bridge project’s community benefits program, Fathers brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Residing on Manchester Road within Ward 2, he aims to address various community concerns, ranging from minor infrastructure improvements to advocating for residents’ priorities during the upcoming city budget discussions.
Fathers is set to engage with Mayor Drew Dilkens on budgetary matters, particularly in light of the mayor’s proposal for a zero per cent tax increase. He expressed eagerness to collaborate with the mayor to align community needs with budget priorities, emphasizing his commitment to representing Ward 2 residents’ voices effectively.
The byelection in Ward 2 was prompted by the resignation of Fabio Costante earlier this year, who served as councillor for nearly seven years before assuming a leadership position at the community housing corporation. Notable challengers included Nick Amlin and Sam Romano, with other candidates also vying for the council seat.
Overall, Fathers’s election marks a significant milestone in Windsor’s governance landscape, with his platform focused on enhancing community well-being and addressing key issues affecting residents of the west end.
