An inquiry investigating the death of a Wiikwemkoong resident at Sudbury District Jail is concluding today, following a week of testimony that exposed deficiencies in healthcare leading up to the individual’s passing four years ago. Justin Alexander Trudeau, a 44-year-old father of five, passed away on February 13, 2021, due to acute staphylococcus aureus pneumonia and septicemia, resulting in his lungs being significantly heavier than normal. Testimony revealed that his lungs were filled with pus and fluid from a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, which progressed to septic shock and multiple organ failure.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Martin Queen informed the jury that Trudeau’s lungs were dense and filled with pus due to the MRSA infection, which spread to his bloodstream, causing septic shock and organ failure. Trudeau was found unresponsive in his cell early on February 13, and despite being close to potential release from jail, he tragically passed away. An inmate in a neighboring cell claimed to have alerted guards to Trudeau’s distress, but his pleas were allegedly ignored. Corrections officers have refuted these claims, with the jail superintendent finding no fault in their actions.
Due to pandemic restrictions in 2021, the jail’s on-call physician treated patients virtually, including prescribing antibiotics for Trudeau’s hand wound. However, he was not informed of the worsening condition before Trudeau’s death. An infectious disease specialist testified that better monitoring could have detected warning signs of sepsis, such as a low body temperature found the day before his passing. The inadequacy of staffing and limited access to medical records at the Sudbury jail were also highlighted.
Potential recommendations put forth include increasing overnight staffing for emergency hospital escorts, enhancing visual checks on inmates in segregation cells, improving communication among officers, and bolstering healthcare staffing.
