BTS is gearing up for their highly anticipated comeback concert on Saturday night at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square, a renowned landmark in South Korea that embodies the country’s rich heritage and cultural significance. The K-pop sensation’s seven members, all hailing from South Korea, are set to perform songs from their latest album, ARIRANG, marking their return after nearly four years.

The group had been on a hiatus due to their mandatory military service obligations in South Korea. The upcoming free concert is expected to attract a massive crowd of fans and will be livestreamed globally on Netflix. This event is seen as a reaffirmation of BTS’s global presence and influence as they transition from local to international stardom.

According to pop culture commentator Jung Dukhyun, the choice of Gwanghwamun as the concert venue highlights the appeal of traditional Korean culture on a worldwide scale, as evidenced by the success of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters. The resurgence of Korean entertainment globally, notably in North America with hits like Squid Game, Parasite, and Maybe Happy Ending, aligns with BTS’s resurgence in popularity.

BTS’s success in North America has been instrumental in solidifying K-pop’s foothold in Western markets. Their achievements, such as topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Dynamite” in 2020 and winning the top social artist award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2017, have paved the way for other Korean acts to gain recognition.

Gwanghwamun Square, named after the main gate of Gyeongbokgung palace, is a hub for arts and culture events in Seoul. The square’s significance extends to its statues of historical figures like King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-shin, symbolizing Korea’s heritage and democracy. In times of political turmoil, the square has served as a gathering place for protests blending politics and pop culture.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung praised BTS as proud ambassadors of Korean culture and expressed optimism that their concert would showcase the nation’s cultural richness. With 20,000 ticketed fans expected at the square and an additional 240,000 spectators in surrounding areas watching on screens, the event is set to be a celebration of K-culture and BTS’s global impact.
