More than 1,200 children have registered to receive Christmas gifts this year from the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, showing a continued rise in demand for the program since registration commenced recently.
Executive director Danielle Seward mentioned that in previous years, the organization typically catered to around 800 to 900 kids, but this year’s numbers have surpassed that. The association has modified its approach, shifting from allowing parents to request specific gifts, gift cards, or winter clothing to now focusing on children’s interests only.
Moreover, there has been a reduction in the value of gifts per child, with each child now set to receive gifts worth $150 instead of the previous $200. This adjustment comes as a response to increased demand and declining donations, as noted by Seward, who highlighted the importance of every contribution during this challenging period.
The organization aims to spread Christmas joy to more families this year, even if it means providing a lesser amount to each family compared to previous years. Registration for those interested in sponsoring a family is ongoing, with the first gift packages scheduled to be distributed next week.
Seward emphasized the significance of early preparations, pointing out that many single parents are already planning for Christmas in October rather than focusing on Halloween. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that as many families as possible can experience the holiday spirit despite the current challenges.
