Israel has transferred the bodies of 15 Palestinians on Wednesday, following the return of an Israeli hostage by Hamas. The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the transfer of the bodies to Gaza. Two hostages, one Israeli and one Thai national, are still believed to be in Gaza, with Hamas committing to returning them as part of the agreement.
In Cairo, Turkish, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators convened to discuss the next phase of the ceasefire. Plans include deploying an armed International Stabilization Force (ISF) and establishing an international body to govern Gaza and oversee reconstruction. The ISF’s responsibilities will include maintaining security and ensuring Hamas’ disarmament, a critical demand from Israel. Indonesian officials have announced intentions to contribute 20,000 peacekeepers to the ISF.
Despite accusations of violations from both sides, the fragile ceasefire has largely held. Israel has agreed to return 15 Palestinian bodies for each hostage recovered under the truce plan. To date, 345 Palestinian bodies have been repatriated, as confirmed by the Gaza Health Ministry. However, only 99 of the bodies have been identified due to the lack of DNA testing kits in Gaza.
Israel mourned the loss of Dror Or, the latest hostage returned by Palestinian militants. Or and his wife were tragically killed during an attack in Kibbutz Be’eri in 2023. The couple’s bravery in rescuing their children before their deaths was commended. Palestinian militants killed approximately 1,200 people and abducted 251 to Gaza, sparking the conflict. With Or’s remains returned, almost all hostages or their bodies have been accounted for.
Hamas reiterated its commitment to finalizing the exchange by returning the remaining hostages. Meanwhile, Israeli forces were involved in incidents in Gaza, resulting in casualties. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with Palestinians in Gaza heavily reliant on aid. In a separate development, the Israeli military launched an operation in the West Bank, citing security concerns and the need to counter militant activities in the region.
